The Three "D's"

Goodbye 2020...Hello 2021! Like the saying goes, “A new year, a new you!” It’s time to start fresh. January is a great month to cleanse mentally, emotionally and physically. Some people resolve to eat healthier, be nicer, go to the gym more or budget better. Personally, I choose to tackle my closet. A good place to start decluttering is with your wardrobe. For some of you, this thought might bring a sense of dread, but for a stylist, like myself, it’s delightful.

History states that the closet was a place to store treasured possessions. It was also a place for prayer, reading, and quiet contemplation. Today, closets come in all shapes and sizes. Many of us have an overwhelming amount of clothing, shoes or accessories shoved into drawers or haphazardly hung on hangers. Because of this, people either have the same outfits on repeat, claim that they have nothing to wear or overbuy since they don’t even know what they own. Decluttering your wardrobe can help you restore a sense of calm in our life, as well as, enable you to get organized.

One of the best tips for decluttering your closet is to follow the (3) D’s. DEFINITELY. DONATE. DUMP. These are the piles you create as you clear out your closet. As you look through your items, distribute them accordingly. The DEFINITELY pile consists of pieces you like to wear, that fit well and are in good condition, as well as, keepsakes like your wedding gown or favorite team’s jersey. The DONATE pile is filled with clothes, shoes and accessories that you no longer intend to wear, but would love for someone else to enjoy. The DUMP pile is exactly that. Items that are damaged beyond repair and could not be worn by anyone else.

Once you’ve determined what goes in each section, bag up your donations and dump piles. Now, it’s time to restock your closet. You can color coordinate your clothing or group similar pieces together. Have fun organizing your shoes and accessories in cute bins or containers. When you’re done, your wardrobe will feel fresh and your mind will be at ease. Plus, you may even have some extra space for those “post holiday” sales!
